Active Involvement through MSA Committees: MSA committees provide physicians with opportunities to engage in scientific, legislative, administrative, and other anesthesia-related issues. Serving on these committees is an excellent way to connect with fellow colleagues and deepen your understanding of shared concerns and interests.

          Bylaws

          Purpose: Maintains and updates the Society’s governing documents.
          Composition: Chair and 3–5 appointed members.
          Term: 2 years
          Duties:

          • Review and propose amendments to bylaws

          • Ensure compliance with state and national standards

          Economics

          Purpose: Advises on payment policy, reimbursement, and economic trends.
          Composition: Chair and members with interest in practice management or advocacy.
          Term: 2 years
          Duties:

          • Review payer policies

          • Assist in advocacy on reimbursement issues

          • Educate members on economic challenges

          Investments

          Purpose: Advises the Society on investment strategies to ensure responsible financial stewardship.
          Composition: Treasurer (ex-officio) and two appointed members.
          Term: Treasurer serves ex-officio; other members serve 3-year terms.
          Duties:

          • Provide guidance on the Society’s investment strategy

          • Review fund performance and recommend adjustments as needed

          • Support long-term financial sustainability

          Governmental Affairs

          Purpose: Monitors and advocates on legislative and regulatory issues impacting anesthesiology.
          Composition: Twelve members representing the geographic distribution of the state.
          Term: 2 years; six members appointed annually.
          Duties:

          • Review and evaluate federal and state legislative and regulatory matters

          • Educate members and policymakers on the Society’s positions

          • Support advocacy efforts and represent the Society in legislative matters as directed by the Executive Committee

          Judicial

          Purpose: Addresses matters of ethics, discipline, and member standing within the Society.
          Composition: Five members in good standing with MSA for at least 5 years and ASA for at least 10 years.
          Term: 5 years, beginning after the annual meeting following appointment.
          Duties:

          • Review and adjudicate issues related to ethics, discipline, and professional conduct

          • Conduct investigations and hearings as outlined in the Bylaws

          • Make final determinations on cases involving no violation

          • Provide recommendations before any action is taken by the Executive Committee or the Society

          Membership

          Purpose: Oversees membership eligibility, recruitment, and status changes.
          Composition: Comprised of the Steering Committee of the Executive Committee.

          Duties:

          • Review and recommend action on membership applications

          • Address membership status questions and concerns

          • Promote membership among qualified individuals

          • Approve or deny annual dues waiver requests as outlined in the Bylaws

          Nominations

          Purpose: Oversees the nominations process for elected positions within the Society.
          Composition: The three most recent past presidents, with the most senior serving as Chair.

          Term: 3 years, one member appointed each year.

          Duties:

          • Develop a slate of nominees for officer and delegate positions

          • Ensure fairness and transparency in the nominations process

          • Annually sign and adhere to a conflict of interest policy

          • Recuse members in the event of a conflict; vacancies are filled by prior past presidents as needed

          Programs

          Purpose: Plans and develops the Society’s scientific and educational programming.
          Composition: Ten members, with a Chair and Vice Chair appointed by the President. Nonmembers may serve as nonvoting advisory members.
          Term: 2 years; five members appointed annually.
          Duties:

          • Design the theme and format of educational and scientific programs

          • Oversee content for Society publications (print and digital)

          • Ensure high-quality continuing education opportunities

          • Vice Chair assumes leadership if the Chair cannot serve; vacancies are filled by presidential appointment

          Public Education

          Purpose: Promotes public awareness and understanding of anesthesiology.
          Composition: Twelve members.
          Term: 3 years; four members appointed annually.
          Duties:

          • Share accurate, accessible information about anesthesiology with the public

          • Strengthen relationships with medical organizations, government agencies, hospitals, and insurers

          • Support outreach initiatives that enhance the visibility of the specialty

          Publications

          Purpose: Oversees Society communications and publications to keep members informed.
          Composition: At least six members, including the Editor and Associate Editor of the MSA Newsletter. At least three members must have served the previous year.
          Term: General members: 1 year, Editor & Associate Editor: 3 years

          Duties:


          • Publish the MSA Newsletter and other communications relevant to anesthesiology

          • Develop and distribute additional materials as approved by the Executive Committee

          • Ensure timely and accurate dissemination of Society updates
            Vacancies: If the Editor cannot serve, the Associate Editor assumes the role, Other vacancies are filled by presidential appointment

          COAST

          Purpose: Represents medical students, residents, and fellows across Massachusetts.
          Composition: Co-chairs, Co-chair-elects, Fellow and Medical Student Liaisons, and Program Liaisons from each residency program.
          Term: 1 year (2 years for Medical Student Liaison).
          Duties:

          • Share updates between MSA and training programs

          • Organize the NEAR Conference

          • Represent trainees at ASA meetings and the Legislative Conference

          Special Committees

          Young Professionals Committee

          Purpose: Supports early career anesthesiologists by developing initiatives tailored to their unique needs.
          Composition: Appointed by the President for the duration of their term.
          Duties:

          • Create programming and resources for physicians in their first five years of practice

          • Foster professional development, mentorship, and engagement within the Society

          • Explore innovative ways to support the transition from training to practice

          Scholarships Committee

          Purpose: Ensures fair and thoughtful selection of scholarship recipients.
          Composition: Appointed by the President for the duration of their term.
          Duties:

          • Review scholarship applications

          • Evaluate candidates based on established criteria

          • Select awardees through an impartial and unbiased process
