The MSA is proud to honor Dr. Alexander Hannenberg, a former Chair of the MSA, former President of the ASA, and 2015 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, by naming this scholarship in recognition of his lasting contributions to the specialty. Each year, the Alexander Hannenberg Scholarship is awarded to a resident or fellow member passionate about advocacy who wishes to attend the American Society of Anesthesiologists' annual Legislative Conference. | Introduced in 2025, the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists' (MSA) new scholarship program expanded the Society's commitment to early-career anesthesiologists by supporting medical students, residents, fellows, and early-career physicians in attending the ASA Annual Meeting, one of the most influential national gatherings in the field. We were proud that four MSA members attended as part of this program, gaining access to cutting-edge science, advocacy training, and a national network of colleagues. | Held annually, the ASA Advance business meeting offers residents and fellows specialized sessions on leadership, business relationships, governance, and more, providing valuable insight into the professional and organizational side of anesthesiology practice. Each year, the MSA awards this scholarship to a resident or fellow member who has demonstrated a passion for leadership and governance and a strong, active interest in deepening that knowledge and building connections by attending the meeting. |
These scholarships are designed to provide early exposure to national advocacy and leadership, support professional development and career exploration, and encourage lifelong engagement with both MSA and ASA. By reducing financial barriers, they help ensure that medical students, residents, fellows, and early-career physicians have access to the opportunities and connections that can shape their future in anesthesiology. |
