The Committee on Anesthesiology Students and Trainees (COAST).

The function of the Committee on Anesthesiology Students and Trainees (COAST) is multifaceted.

It consists of two co-chairs, two co-chair elects, one secretary, one treasurer, one medical school liaison as well as of one medical school student liaison as well as one member of the resident and fellow membership from each of the anesthesiology residency programs within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

The COAST committee serves as a platform for students, resident and fellow members to address issues and concerns specific to their training programs. It also collaborates with other MSA committees and leaders to advocate for the professional development and well-being of residents and fellows in anesthesiology across Massachusetts

Goals

  • Advocacy for Anesthesiology: Represent the interests of all Massachusetts medical school students, residents, and fellows in addressing state and national issues impacting future anesthesiologists.
  • Active Engagement: Maintain an active presence at both state (MSA) and national (ASA) meetings to ensure proper representation and effective advocacy for our specialty.
  • Promotion of Anesthesia Awareness: Foster interest in anesthesiology by advocating for and facilitating anesthesia awareness and interest groups across all medical schools in Massachusetts.

    Events

    Every year, COAST members accompany physician members to a variety of events. These events include conferences, executive committee meetings, and events where COAST members have the opportunity to network with professionals in the field and gain valuable insights into the latest advancements in anesthesiology. Additionally, attending these events allows COAST members to stay updated on current trends and best practices, enhancing their overall training experience.   Explore upcoming events including MSA Advocacy Night.

    2025 Open COAST Board Positions

    Co-Chair Elect (2 Positions): 

    • 1-year Chair Elect position, followed by 1-year Chair position (total 2-year commitment) 

    • Co-lead all COAST initiatives, attend bi-monthly MSA meetings, oversee planning of the New England Anesthesia Resident Conference 

    • Attend the ASA Annual Meeting and the ASA Legislative Conference (financial support provided)  

    PROGRAMS

    Lead Program Liaison (1 position): 

    • 1-year commitment 

    • 1 liaison selected from the group of program liaisons to serve as the primary contact between the MSA/COAST board and all program liaisons. 

    • Will be expected to attend COAST Exec Board meetings and is a great position for those interested in the co-chair position in the future  

    Program Liaison (2 per residency program):  

    • 1-year commitment 

    • Serve as the primary liaison between COAST/MSA and your residency program and communicate important advocacy efforts, state/national updates, MSA initiatives, and attend quarterly MSA meetings  

    • Ensure your program benefits from MSA resources and representation 

    CONFERENCE PLANNING

    The New England Anesthesia Conference Planning Committee (10-15 medical students & residents): 

    • March 2025 to September 2025 commitment 

    • Roles include but are not limited to: recruiting guest speaker(s), coordinating breakout rooms/activities, selecting abstracts and organizing the poster/case presentations, logistics surrounding conference space, time, organization, and food, and creating a conference experience to engage medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty 

    The New England Anesthesia Conference Planning Committee Chair (1 position)

    • 1 year commitment
    • Attend COAST exec board meetings 
    • Primary contact between MSA/COAST board and conference planning committee
    • Coordinate meetings with conference committee, aid with conference planning tasks
    • Manage NEAR conference funds

    Medical Student Liaison Position

    This is a 2-year term position designed to build relationships and connections within the state society. Communicate with Anesthesia Interest Group leaders from medical schools within the state. Provide updates at the executive committee meetings, as well as give updates to ASA MSC governing council leaders. Participate in state events. Be recognized as a leader in the field of anesthesia as a medical student.
